Ironton is developing a modern merchant pig iron project along the Ohio River. The facility is planned to include a mini blast furnace, mini sinter plant, state-of-the-art air pollution control equipment, and an integrated cogeneration facility.
What Ironton Is, And Is Not
The project will produce merchant pig iron, a critical raw material for EAF-based steelmakers and foundries. Merchant pig iron is not rebar or another finished steel product.

What is Ironton proposing?
Ironton is developing a modern merchant pig iron project in Follansbee, West Virginia, along the Ohio River.
Will there be process water discharged to the Ohio River?
No. The project is a zero-discharge facility with no process water effluent.
Why is the project getting an air permit?
Industrial facilities with regulated air emissions must obtain appropriate air authorization before construction and operation. The draft permit and public notice process give the public an opportunity to review the proposed permit conditions and submit comments through the official WV DEP Division of Air Quality process.
How will construction and project execution be managed?
Ironton plans to use an owner-led, contractor-supported execution model with owner oversight, project management, process engineering, balance-of-plant engineering, construction management, air pollution control and cogeneration specialists, equipment and materials suppliers, quality inspection resources, and commissioning/startup support.
